Wreck Of USS Wasp Found

The wreck of World War II aircraft carrier USS Wasp has been discovered in the Coral Sea more than 70 years after the ship was sunk during the Guadalcanal campaign.Wasp was spotted on the seabed by experts from the vessel RV Petrel, which is part of a research organization set up by the late billionaire Paul Allen.

The carrier was escorting Marine reinforcements to Guadalcanal when she was hit by four torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-19 on Sept. 15, 1942. Of the ship’s 2,162-strong crew, 176 were killed in the attack.

Interesting. The Pacific seabed is littered with WWII warships. According to the US Navy Chronicle, 866 Japanese and 319 US warships were sunk during the war. We should not forget.

That was my father's ship. He was there when the torpedoes hit. The first one killed his best friend and my namesake. Dad then spent 20 hours in the water before being picked up by a destroyer. His next ship was the "Fighting Lady" the Yorktown which he spent the rest of the war on. After 8 years at sea he told me every time I begged him to take me to the ocean that he never wanted to see it again. I guess I can't blame him.
