As long as you can keep your water fairly clean that shouldn't be a problem if it's set up correctly. I'd be more worried about the pump getting clogged up with plant matter and loosing flow than having gold float. A box made from 1/4 inch hardware cloth than covered with window screen will work great as a filter. You just have to scrape the sides of it once in a while to keep water flowing into it so the pump can do its thing.

I've been using a recirc system here in the sesert for some time now and they work great. Because your'e running the G.H. mats, you're going to need a lot of flow for them to work correctly. I'd suggest as big a holding tank as you can haul out and fill up with out killing yourself. The larger the tank the less often you'll have to change the water out.

If you Want to. PM me the specs for your system and I can give you some help with it. It's better to learn from the mistakes made by others than to repete them yourself. ;)

So long as it's getting wet in the hopper destruction chamber you should be fine.
Check out doc's higbanker setup, lots of tips and tricks in this video, may give you some ideas on your setup.
Good Luck! <3

Edit:
Also if you are in a recirculation setup you can use Jet-Dry to make the gold drop easier.
