Big C, might be worth keeping a pic of this one even though it says "copy" on it. I am a little confused about it being a 1715 fleet copy since the date looks like 1759
http://cgi.ebay.com/1715-Fleet-Cob-Pendant_W0QQitemZ310202199838

This is kind of a cool Lima 2 reale pendant. Too bad the cross is not bolder....
http://cgi.ebay.com/Colonial-Spain-Lima-rare-coin-pendant-18K-gold-diamonds_W0QQitemZ380208652832

The date centered over the cross is a good clue these are fake....
http://cgi.ebay.com/Atocha-One-Reale-Earrings_W0QQitemZ310202175300

Corroded, but strong 1655 date from yhe Maravillas....

What is really neat about this one is......that it has a second FULL date...and it's in the legend (Pillars side) which makes it very very hard to come by in any condition.

Trez, check this out. Compare to the 2 reale coin at the top of page 208 of Sewall Menzel's "Cobs, Pieces of Eight and Treasure Coins". It is the exact same coin. Not just like it, it is the coin pictured!!! When I looked it up I couldn't believe it.

Anyway, I agree that seeing a date on that part of the periphery is very rare by that period in Potosi history, regardless of denomination (flan size). As another interesting point note that it has quadruple mint marks!

I thought the mount was very nice. I like the way he followed the outline of the coin and the contrasting platinum prongs. Along with the diamonds any lady pirate would probably love to wear that, especially if her man sports a macho 8 reale gargantuan.

Good to hear from you Trez!

Dread,

That is either a 1543 or a 1544 since that assayer "S" (Rodrigo Gomez de Santillan) only served during those years. Since those early coins are undated, it is great to have a way to know the date within just a couple of years. Very interesting coin to study further. Let me do some research and also look at some past auction sales for a value estimate.

Glad to hear you are studying too and have the Sedwick book on the way! Another fine book at the top of my recommendation list would be:

Cobs: Pieces of Eight and Treasure Coins--The Early Spanish American Mints and Their Coinages, 1536-1773

http://www.amazon.com/Cobs-Treasure-Coins-American-1536-1773/dp/0897222849

Not cheap ($125), but I have found it to be my most valuable resource, and I have many books and catalogs....

Dread, here are a few of the others in that seller's group....

This assayer "O" 1/2 reale is 1572-1589....
http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICO-PHILIP-II-1-2-REAL-ND-O-M-O-KM-20-VF_W0QQitemZ120534431160

Same assayer O and date range, but 1 reale....
http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICO-1-REAL-PHILIP-II-KM-26-VF_W0QQitemZ120534434763

This assayer "O" 1 reale is 1564-1572 (different "O" assayer than above)....
http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICO-CHARLES-AND-JOHANNA-1516-1556-1-REAL-KM-9_W0QQitemZ120534423136

This assayer "L" i/2 reale is 1548-1567....
http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICO-CHARLES-AND-JOHANNA-1516-1556-1-2-REAL-KM-6-5_W0QQitemZ120534421380

Difficult to make out an assayer to date this 1/2 reale, but definitely later than 1572....
http://cgi.ebay.com/MEXICO-1-2-REAL-PHILIP-III-1610-1620-FINE_W0QQitemZ120534436977

Gotta rest my eyes a while....

If you saw the book you would see the main reason for the large cost. It is a large format, thick (484 page) book illustrated with tons of pictures and details of the known date ranges and variants of every type minted all the Spanish colonial mints.

I don't know anything about the coin you mention, but maybe you can post a picture. Is it hand struck?

Stan,
The post listed below by Dread....not sure an assayer "S" is correct....looks more like G also it's not a 1 real, it's a 4 (sellers error)

After another look I think you are right Trez. One thing I noticed that kind of swayed me was the light dot right above PLVS VLTRA. Menzell mentions the dot briefly in describing a variation of the 1 reale attributed to assayer "S" (see page 62). I realize this is a 4 reale, but I thought it might share that design element. The assayer "G" that followed (1544-1548) also shows a faint dot in one example on the top left picture on page 66.

Once again, I didn't look at all the possibilities before drawing a conclusion. Thanks for the correction. :icon_thumleft:

I think the 4 floating on the fine haired texture of the waves looks cool on this coin.

PS - Look at the fleet coin this seller advertised....

Stan,

I looked into what you said about that Lima being Menzels Book...
Does that make you wonder about that Lima 2 ???? I wonder how it found it's way into a Bezel as such and or if it really is the word or words we are not suppose to ask in this forum any more, lol.
I may write the seller....Ebay loves me.
