In my opinion, and that of many others, the best book on stamp collecting I have ever read is THE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF STAMP COLLECTING, written by Otto Hornung, published in 1970. It has the history and all the ins and outs of collecting plus the grading chart to determine a stamps true value versus the catalog value at the end is worth the price of the book alone. Interesting story also about the 1 cent magenta British Guiana that recently sold for 9.5 mil and how Hornung felt it was counterfeit, and he produces the evidence to prove his point. Anyways this book is considered the Holy Grail of stamp collecting by many collectors and if you have any interest in the hobby at all it would be to your benefit to give this book a read. Used copies are available on Amazon starting at 9 cents plus the standard $3.99 shipping charge. Knowledge is power, and this book is loaded with ideas that a collector can apply to their hobby.
