Whites had a pair of rechargables (large white for twelve volts and small blue for nine). I assume they were just made up of AA cells. If you want to cut weight you could substitute a PP3 for the smaller battery pack and accept the limited detecting time or buy new holders and try 14 AAA's.

lithiums r great,BUT when mine levels were at 11.7 it dropped al the way down to the low battery warning.when i first put in i got a 14.5 reading(awesome)

Most manufactures tell you that you will get better operation in your detector by using Alkaline type as apposed to Lithiums. Lithiums last longer, but deliver the charge differently to effect the operation I am told by Tesoro and Whites.
