Chipped coil

Hey all, I noticed the other day that my search coil is missing a piece off the bottom. You can see to the metal upper ring. The sector still hits targets but I'm not sure if I'm missing some. Anyway to fix this coil?

Thats all I need is one more hobby. I have to quit my job.

should have had a Coil cover on.

You can try Epoxy Or a coil cover yet

allot depends on how bad, But I would not consider it waterproof anymore
unless you can cover it with something water resistant

if your sure it is dry inside

do a good Job so it is Flush then
buy yourself a Coil cover,
so next time you can just switch covers .

Is the black plastic on the bottom a cover for the coil or the coil itself. It's dry still and detector seems to working good.

See if you can pop it off ?

If it doesn't give, It's the coil.
If it's a coil cover you should be able to slide it off

The Coil should look shiny like glass or epoxy The cover should just be plastic...Ive went thru a couple covers, but they dont typically chip, they just get worn off or crack

I've fixed worn through coil covers with fiberglass resin like they use in body shops for cars. Also once epoxied an old Frisbee to the bottom of one as a repair. The magnet wire inside will start shorting out if you abrade the thin enameled surface on it off, so definitely take some kind of action to rectify this situation. Sounds like your coil wire is still ok or your machine would be emitting all kinds of false signals.

Same thing happened to mine. I used West Systems 5 minute epoxy to repair, it is still waterproof. Just make sure everything is completely dry. I now use coil covers on all my coils.

definitely looks like the bottom of the coil to me.

If this were a coil cover this ridges would be on the top of the coil not bottom



I'm not familiar with West Systems 5 minute epoxy,
but if gldnbrew uses it, it is probably the way to go.

I would definitely purchase a Cover also.

Whatever you do, don't paste the cover on though.
Let it loose so it can be removed to clean out & replaced if
your naturally hard on them.

unless things really changed, the "Coil" is actually Wire Rapped in a circle a specific amount of times And
imbedded inside the plastic.

I'm not sure if there is anything else in there.

But either way, it's best not to let a hole happen in which water can enter.

Looking at that makes me wonder if a coil cover would have helped any at all. It took a pretty hard blow to crack it like that.

Formula 27 Ace Hardware. Big or small can. Comes in white. You have about 1 minute to spread it. Dries harder than Chinese Arithmetic. I have repaired coils for 25 years. Reinforce with a blue gang box from the electrical dept. Use Krazy glue Maximum Bond. Long Green tube. Use clamps when needed. Fiberglass before you coat with Form. 27. You will get years of use from the repairs using these products.
