Asking someone to hunt their property

Hi everyone, and yes I'm very new to this. I wanted to know how to go about asking someone if I could search their property. I have a few places in mind but don't know what to say to the property owner. Do you start up some bs conversation and just move it to "hey, would ya mind....." or what?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks

Re: Asking someone to hunt their property

    My favorite, for abandond properties,
    or fields.

find out who the owner is.

Wait till you see a Neighbor out of his house.
Even if the closest Neighbor lives out of site of the Owner.

Walk up to the Neighbor & introduce Myself.

    "Hi !, I'm ---- ------ & I was looking to see someone
around to ask about this land here"

    "I'm into Metal Detecting &
am Trying to find out who Owns it."

When they tell you, say Thank you & Shake
their hand while asking "You Are" ?
(Remember this name, unless your research
    already told you. )

Now go over the the Property owner.

    "Hi !, I'm ---- ------ & I was looking to see someone
around to ask about this land here"

I am into Metal detecting, & was talking to Mr ---- over there & he said I should talk
    to you about getting permission.
Would you mind if I give it a try ? "

(In cases of Abandond Structures, I sometimes get,
Oh he Died, or He lives out of state somewhere, or
I take Care of it for him, or Nobody seems to know.

They will usually follow with just go do it nobody will care.
You need to Weigh your options here. But Most of the time
I'll decde, I can always say, Mr. ---- over there gave me permission.
or 'I asked at the Post office, They said nobody would Care,
I asked the Cop in town. He said Nobody will bother me"
I stopped at the Township Building & asked & they said Just
    go for it"
    whatever the situation calls for.)

IF I approach the Known Owner, I still play Dumb & ask
who owns it & when they say they do, Brag up the Property with Everything you know about it. History, Etc, & listen intently to
any info they share. Get Excited.
When the Conversation Slows, Bring up your reason for asking.

"anyway, I am into Metal detecting, & was wondering IF I could
see if there is anything to find."

Buisness, Walk into the Office & ask.

    Township Property Same.

I never ask at occupied homes to do their yards.
    Just a Personal Phobia.
    They need to ask me.

    NOTE.
IF you did research & have Histories, Old maps
of the Property. Old Pics etc. By all means take them with.
    Show them to them.

again.... BE EXCITED ! show them your
    impressed with the property
    & Love history.

If they Bring up Sharing or seeing your finds say Sure.
(Most are just Joking, Or hoping for a Big find,
& are not impressed with our Normal Finds)
I'v known one who gets upset & says in no uncertain terms
What he finds is his, He ain't sharing cause he does the digging.
I doubt he gets many sites without sneaking on.
