On a recent hunt at a park in Orange County Ca. My hunting partner (wife) found a JHW climax Co. train lock , these locks were used on rail cars to secure their contents. They were manufactured between 1880s to 1920s give or take a few years. Nice find in a newer park 1970s.
The lock was located near the edge of the park grounds. Not a bad find, very unusual find for the area.

Yep, that is cool. You bring up a good park point. Hunt the less obvious parts of a park. You never know what was there 100 years ago. Everybody and their brother hits the obvious spots in a park. Why waste time with these. My best finds have been near the edges or back areas and even to woods or brush. You might find less but the potential for a great find is much higher.

Orange County was once criss-crossed with the Red Lines, the right-of-ways, many of which have been converted to inter-community trail systems and parks.

In addition, there are numerous RR spur lines in former Ag fields converted to new communities.

The Irvine family once owned about 25% of the entire county which was used for Orange groves, sugar beets, cattle and other AG uses.

LA county is similar...

So its very possible to find such relics in more recent parks...
