Tesoro says the Cibola is a ED180. It's definitely not a ED120. I love my Cibola!

Thanks tabman, odd it's listed wrong by Tesoro.

Tesoro used to say the Vaq was 180 ED, they had to change that because unlike the Tejon or Compadre this was not really true.
According to most the Vaq, and I assume it's close cousin the Cibola, hover more around the 165-170 ED area.

What real life advantage does ED180 have over ED165-170? A detector with ED120 has just enough discrimination on the low end to discriminate out a common nail.

I thought 180 could be set for zero discrimination and 120 when at minimum still blocked iron?

That's right, but what real advantage does ED180 have over ED165-170 when you're out detecting?

Probably none.
I have gotten really tiny nails with my Vac in all metal that it couldn't see with the disc all the way down.
Since I don't really hunt for tiny nails it is no big deal.
I bet all 180-160-120 ED units should pick up rings and coins fine in disc, maybe the thinnest, tiniest gold chains might be tough but a rare target to come across.
I got my Compadre for those, anyway.

Maybe it's the detector model itself, but I was under the impression the 180 was hotter than the 120 in addition to it's iron range.

It seems like my Silver microMax is 180. I was using it Sunday and when I rolled the disc up on copper pennies they dropped out. On my Vaq they seem to never drop out when at max disc

I don't hunt tinny tiny nails either. If it's a ED120 detector I use its lowest discrimination setting which just barely discriminates a common nail. To me a ED120 detector does better at detecting in a bed of nails than a ED180 detector does. It seems to run smoother. When I'm using a detector with a ED180 I set the discrimination at where a ED120 detector just barely discriminates out a common nail. Some people find it necessary to point out that the Vaquero is not a true ED180 detector, but haven't ever explained the big advantage of ED180 over say ED160-170. I keep asking.:laughing7:

I believe your Silver µMax is when you switch it over to all metal discrimination. The coin range is more spread out on a ED120 detector and less on a ED180 detector, because its iron range is wider.
