A couple hours with the Mojave today - my first “buff” nickel!

Was out for a couple hours detecting with my daughter this evening, hitting what looked like it could have been a sled run many years back, and walked into a spot that may have been an old camp area. Thought I’d take the Mojave since I hadn’t used it at all this year. As usual, it worked very well. I probably should use it more, but still prefer the Bandido tone and having threshold all metal I can switch to when targets are few, and also for checking hot rocks.

Along with a bit of newer change, I found my first “buff” nickel, a wheatie and two silver quarters. Sadly, no date on the nickel.

I haven’t been detecting as much this year as I should; been occupied with other things.. I need to get out more - there’s still lots of stuff on that mountain!

nice productive hunt! i been concentrating on sidewalk easements with my
mo-jo,but getting mainly clad, but don't care ,just love the modulation on the mojave!
so much fun to hunt with!

I still like my Bandido better.. Just felt like grabbing the Mojave today.
I think it was mostly the spot I picked - It was probably a snow play area many years ago but not used as much these days. Really pretty area though; I’ll head back there in a few days. Would love to find some old rings around there..

just curious! what were your settings on the mo-jo.
i usually hunt with nails giving a broken hit, and try to
"read" the clean "mellow" hits of coins. smooth "modulated"
deeper non-ferrous is what i'm looking for, with "harsh" clean tones
checked with the "thumb flip!"

I use it with the disc set at 8:30-9:00, just below the line. It knocks out small bits of foil there and little iron bits.
Have been using it with sensitivity at about 5.

Enough detector talk. How about that Buff? Can you give us a good pic of the date side? I have a 1916 and have to get the light just right to see the date. I had to give it a good soaking in Tabasco sauce to get it to come out. Congratulations on the silver!

All I can see of a date is the last digit, a very faint “4”. So, ‘14, ‘24 or ‘34..
That area has been used to play around, probably since about 1900 - maybe even before that. I know there’s lots more to find up there. Surprised it took me this long to find a buff nickel. In that area I’ve found a ‘43 half dollar, a couple merc’ dimes and a fair bit of newer silver. Couple gold and silver rings, too. Still haven’t dug up a Benjamin half.. There must be a few out there. Going back in a day or two for more.

i try to "crank" gain as much as possible and still stay stable.
think i'll move my "disc" up to just eliminate "nails" take 'em out clean.
getting tired of "broken" hits at the low end. gets aggravating after a while!
sounds like a site you can spent a ton of time at! ..good luck!

I sometimes turn the gain up higher - depends on the detector and where I’m detecting. In harder ground it seems that larger, shallow coins give a more solid signal with gain set lower. If I’m detecting in deep pine needles or composted forest, I crank the gain up as high as possible. When I use Tesoro’s later high gain models, I notice too much gain on large shallow coins breaks the signal up.. Turn it down and shallow, big coins sound more solid.
