My nephew (Shaw) and I were hunting in New Caney and came across construction site where they had dug out t least 4 feet of dirt. We were hunting the pit and I hit this bullet about another 4 inches down. It is a lead bullet, but I cannot find an ID. It has a solid bottom and 3 grooves. I took pictures next to a dime to give you some perspective on the size, but sorry, they aren't great pictures. Can anyone help w/the ID? Thanks!

I was going to say a Spencer or Merrill carbine, but it is too small for those based on the dime comparison.
I don't have my book handy but it looks like it's probaby about a 44 cal or so.

I had no idea just looking at it for a few min.
Its larger than a .22 round and when I first looked at I had a .30 in mind

It has a tall base before the grooves start and I couldn't find it with any of my reference books.

>:( Well, the bullet only measures 1/4 inch (.25 cal?). can't find anything in that reference that small, so I'm guessing it's not a great find....still would like to know what it is though. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Somone on the ID board said that Smith and Wesson made .31 & .32 in 1861 - Civil War pistols. That would be awesome! anyone else?
