Early 1900s Russian Empire Beer Mug?

I'm hoping someone can help shed some light on the symbols on a beer mug I purchased today. The mug itself is crudely constructed of a slightly yellow opaque glass (custard glass?) and very heavy in relation to it's size (2lbs. versus only 5.5" in height). One side has what looks like a coat of arms, and the other has a flag or banner, and within that banner is a smaller flag featuring the double-headed imperial eagle of the Russian Empire.






In this next picture, I left the inside of the mug dirty, as it was when I purchased it, because it better shows off the crude finish.



My research so far has revealed very little. What I have been able to determine is that the mug likely dates from prior to 1917, when the use of the double-headed eagle was abolished (being identified with Tsarist rule), or after 1993, when it's use was restored. I tend to lean towards the former due to the mug's primitive craftsmanship and relatively poor cosmetic condition.

I have also noticed the date "1896" in the upper left quadrant of the coat of arms. When I Google search that date + Russian Empire, it appears to be a reference to the coronation date of Tsar Nicholas II.

So, I am tentatively dating the mug from between 1896-1917. Unfortunately I can't decipher any other images or text well enough to do any more research. Hopefully one of you forum sleuths can add your opinion!

Americans would fill that mug to the rim with Beer. Russians would fill it to the rim with Vodka.

Lol you're probably right. Maybe I should take the word 'beer' out of my Google search and replace it with 'vodka'. That could explain why I can't find out anything about the mug.

Resurrecting an old thread to give an update. Turns out this mug is not anything special. Its actually a beer mug from the Cerveceria Moctezuma Brewing Company in Mexico which brews the popular Mexican beers Tecate and Dos Equis. I’m assuming the Russian Empire crest is because one of their beer offerings was a Russian imperial stout or something. Anyway, hopefully this helps someone else if they run across a similar mug. $16-$25 on eBay in much better condition. This mug just got downgraded from my display case to my daily drinker! The hunt to fund an early retirement continues! Happy hunting!
