A locket?

If there is only one pin holding the back in place, maybe it swings open.

I though also along that line, but there are two pins or rivits, one on both ends... The back appears to be thin bronze.

Well for sure it has the shape, but it has solid sides, only the back is thin and riveted on. So there are no sides where something could slide back and forth into.... Will be spending another 2 hours or so on it tomorrow, its soaking at this time, and see if it cleans up anymore. There is a pattern emerging, what I though was a hand was not that at all, just some gunk that looked that way! Thanks for the guess.

Re: From the pit, an unkown object.....Cleaning it, Day 1,2

Day 2. Yesterday after using toothpicks to remove some of the gunk, I put the object into distilled water, to soften up the rest because it was too hard and could not remove it. This morning did some more removing and discovered a nose. I think the nose of an animal.

I have made a couple photos, but the object is wet, so the photos don't show much detail. But anyway a lot of the gunk has now been removed, after today and tomorrow we should know more. The object sure looks different when you are looking at it in person, the photos don't give any credit to it. But that is the way with many finds....

I have now an idea of what it is......

It looks like a hallow decorative switch for an in wall gas line lamp. Before electricity was run through the walls, most places had pressurized gas pipes running thru the houses. Like a petcock that you turn to allow gas to flow or to shutoff gas.

I am probably wrong, but it is a guess nun the less... LOL

Great mystery find!!!

I think it's the nose of a sheep. Small mouth then. So nothing gained, nothing lost.
I have been working somemore on it, sure takes the time.

A large part of the area on the right of the nose, looking at the photo, is now gone, it was all dirt or oxide remains of the metal that was there.

Its appears to be some sort of relief, like a say I see what I could interpert as a sheep's head (the nose is prominent). The back side, that is the side held on with the rivets, well that was added back then to make a shiny background for the front piece. I have a few relics that have that. I would at this moment guess that its at least 17th century, but I think earlier. Thinking about letting it sit now in hot olive oil, or using the peroxide method on it. Whatta you think Cru? I have removed about all the stuff I can at this moment....

Added these two photos. The first is not such a close up and you can see the (what I think is) a sheep. The next photo shows
-red lines a sort of pattern around the outside of the object
-blue arrows point to the eyes
-green line, the hoorn from an Ew?
-yellow points to a mouth...?

Still better in real life! Photos, bah!

Don't think so, then it would be in the 19th century or 20th. This has to be earlier, and is way too fragile for such. Thanks for the comments, I know which values you mean though.

I thought the whole raised line under the yellow arrow was a mouth.

Try the Hot peroxide.
