Old Trunk Lock, Pat. Dec. 6,1892 & Copper Ball Whatzit

Hay Folks,

Went to an old area that I can drive right up to. And nobody
knows about it.

I have hunted this area several times using mostly a 5.75”
concentric coil. A lot of under growth has died off now, so I
decided to hunt it with my 12”X10” concentric coil mounted
on my Euro Sabre.

I was diggin pretty deep on some of these targets.

I cleaned up a few items for closer inspection.

I’m glad there aren’t many pull tabs like this runnin around.

Here’s a very old piece of lead.

11-24-13.jpg

There’s a brass lock off some kind of wooden trunk and a
copper ball on a brass base.

11-24-12.jpg

The copper ball is hollow.

11-24-8.jpg

The base is not threaded.

Here’s the bottom of tha brass lock.

It was made by Eagle Lock Company.

11-24-10.jpg

The company was established in 1833 and incorporated in
1854. At one time, Eagle was the largest trunk and cabinet
lock maker in the world.

The large buildings in this pic is Eagle Lock Company.

In Terryville, Connecticut, stands the Lock Museum of
America. Since 1972, when the museum was established
in a small store on Terryville's Main Street, the museum has
grown to over 500 members.

They have a website at:
http://www.lockmuseum.com/index.html.

Well, that’s about all I can milk out of this post. I guess I
better quit.

Hope you all aren’t bored to tears,

Tabdog

Not bored at all. Nice post and nice history there. There has to be some old coinage lurking around. I hope you get the chance to gather a few. jgas

Wow, nice place to hunt, thanks for posting your finds. Can't tell you
much about the brass thing, looks like it might be a top off of a lid or
something.

Nice post and finds. The copper or brass ball is probably the top of a flag pole or old brass bed frame.Just a guess.Copper most likely used outside and brass inside.

Could the ball be from the end of a walking cane?

digit?

Re: Old Trunk Lock, Pat. Dec. 6,1892 & Copper Ball Whatzit

I have an answer for you on the copper ball as I have several myself. They are top knobs ( finials ) off a cast iron bed of the 1930 vintage. They are copper because they were the crowning point on the four posts. Brass beds seem to always have brass finials. Mine however are threaded and screw onto the bed posts, so looking at the rust on the inside tells me there was some sort iron there at one time and my guess is it was threaded. Hope this helps.
