What a role reversal, last saturday Dad got 5 hammered, today he had none & I got all the 5 silver coins

Nearly 7 hours.

3 hammered
1696 Sixpence
1817 sixpence
Medieval - purse bar bits, clothes fastener, horse pendant hanger, strapend, coin weight, cloth seal.
Nice buckle with pin.

We have limited time tomorrow, so will be back on the field we tried Friday.

Thats a hard one to call, I was very happy with the Roman Silver last week & the Seal, but 3 hammered in a day is a very good total for me

Both Lizy's - 1582 & the small one is 1578-79. The Durham mint in the centre is too far gone to bother IDing.

Firstly, before machinery, it took vast numbers of labours to work the fields. This type of work meant it was more likely 1 or 2 buttons would break off whilst lifting the hay etc,.. Then add on the casual loss of the horse riders getting on & off their horses. Casual loses like these would still only account for about 20% of the buttons. The rest were deliberately dumped on the fields. This took many forms; in the night soil (s*it) which was spread on the land, cart loads of general rubbish, most common was shoddy which was old clothes & military uniforms which were burnt on the field to lighten the soil. Specially used in heavy clay areas as a form of fertilizer.

True, I call modern early 1700s. I get more interested when it lies in the 17th Century (1600s) or before. However, I still enjoy finding Victorian Buttons, or WWI & WWII types. The only things I don't normally search for is Clad & beach finds.

Still, I would like to do a CW site in the US & find a nice button or belt plate!

Work was hard back then, and clothes were not what they are nowadays. It is not for nothing that Levi's with their rivets were so popular. We never really lose a button now, and if we do its made of plastic....
