found this medallion/medal in yard help with ID

I have found this medal in my yard and would like to know what is represents and origins of it any help at all is greatly appriciated thank you

a Friend of Mine Found An Old Class Ring With That Design.

After Researching it, He was Told "LEARNING"

Jeff's right. It's a stock pattern used for scholastic medals: book of knowledge, lamp of learning, etc. Nearly all manufacturers of medals and academic awards offer something similar. For example:

Judging from the ornate border, I'd guess that this one dates back 50 years or more.

It is the lamp of knowledge. Fraternities use this synbol for learning. My fraternity used this symbol.
