Update on the ring. I took it to another jeweler for an informal appraisal, he looked it over and said it is about 1 1/2 karats, and worth an easy 6 to 7 K. Thanks for all the nice replies, I only hope that all of you have a great find like this. Just keep trying and it will happen. It was found at a Malibu Ca. beach in the sandy where people lay the blankets, about 2 in deep. I was using a Headhunter PI detector and it gave off a very strong signal. After I came to I got into the car and drove home chatting on the phone with my Brother Comfy in Vt. That was a day I will never forget.

A rock that size is probably registered somewhere or at least heavily insured. It is not uncommon for the owners to report them stolen although they are just lost so the insureance company would pick up the tab. Be very careful about showing it around. Just a word to the wise. Monty
