I dug this and I think it's some kind button or ornamental decoration. The 'obverse' is rouded', and the 'reverse' has these rounded clips. The black you see in the pciture is some hardened material that the 'clips' are somewhat embedded in. I think the black material is leather.
Do you think I should scrape that stuff out to see if there is any writing on the inside?

Looks like a button off of al leather jacket or coat to me. Monty

Looks like a decorative cap. It would go on a special bolt or screw head, a nice piece of leather furniture might have one.
