3 Ringer finds Old Navy Buttons in West Virginia

I got a call from my friend 3 Ringer. He is over in his home state of West Virginia doing a little metal detecting while visiting family and friends. He sent me these 3 photos of some really old brass Navy Buttons that he found while metal detecting and asked me to post them for him. He wants to know if anyone might recognize the button and can identify it. The back reads: Waterbury Button Co. He found a total of 6 of these. The buttons came from an area where Civil War activity took place.

Actually they are Marine Buttons not Navy Buttons.None the less they are very nice finds.

The location I'm in has a coal mining company house area now built on it with 20 or 30 older homes on it. Did some research on the buttons and found them to be WWI.

The buttons on the tunic display the marine corps eagle. The back of the buttons read "Waterbury Button Co, Conn". They were sewn to the uniform as opposed to some models where a metal ring was employed to secure them.

oooh well, still have 4 indians with the oldest being 1888-1907 / several mining tags and some scrip.

will post pictures of the trip later.
