patented 1849

went for a quick hunt today near a farm field and this is what i found . it says patented march 1849 and then on the next cross piece it says 8th july 1856 is this some type of buckle for a horse? it would have to be a two piece. thanx . willy.

Nice old comb. I found one of those mostly intact when I went on the first CT hunt with Burdie in Kansas.
