My First Shield and it's a Crusty one!

Found this 1867 Shield Nickel, my oldest nickel to date. My excitement was fast extinguished with the poor condition of this coin. It is funny how the ground wreaks havoc... the CRUST would not budge. Tried olive oil after hydrogen peroxide.... So after several days I decided to give the electrolysis a try. 700mA for 20 minutes..... what do you think? I could not believe how fast the CRUD came off.... Did I ruin my crusty cridder? I would never try this on a valuable coin, but this was a fun experiment. :tongue3: :dontknow: :icon_scratch: Thanks for lookin and Happy Hunting.

1867 No Rays variety In Good condition with all letters being readable it would only be worth 18$ and in the condition that it was in I would say that you did not ruin it. Pretty amazing how well the electrolysis worked on it.

I agree! It has like a craquelure effect going on, especially around the number 5. Very nice find and good job on the electrolysis.

Nice,

It's ugly but it is actually in not bad of shape. I;ve been fortunate enough to have found a small handful of sheilds. None of them are nice. My brother not long ago found 2 nice one in good shape.
