Found this today at a new site with Roz and Bri. Awesome detail. Reeded edge. Pretty cool looking. Is still pretty caked up with dirt. Have washed it off with soap and toothbrush. Can someone give a suggestion on how to get the top layer of dirt off. It will then show INCREDIBLE DETAIL! Didn't want to put it in peroxide if there is another way. Seems to be made of either pewter or lead based metal. Will peroxide hurt the detail? This is my third counterfeit coin this year. Have a CFT. Large Cent, an 1824 Bust Half, and now this one. Update: Used "Lever 2000" hand soap and a toothbrush. Didn't quite get it all, but worked pretty good.

Cool coin. Wish we knew more about these counterfeit coins.

If it's pewter, theres not much you can do to clean it. Maybe very gently rub it with a soft brush or a tooth pick like BB uses to clean buttons, but very carefully.

I have a soft spot for counterfeit coins. I found a Draped bust 1803 period one last year and another probable Draped bust large cent one. Also last year.Great job Hoggster. :headbang:

Someone said that toothpaste worked really well with cleaning silver coins. Put just a dab on a cue tip and rub it lightly. It should start coming out clean in a matter of seconds.

Try Simple Green, heat it in a microwave until it bubbles then dip a cloth in it and lightly go over your coin. I never tried cleaning any coins but a friend of mine cleans his coins with the Simple Green.
