Are dog tags worth anything?

My hunting buddy (shootncoin) and I went to a pre-1870s home we work once and a while. It's on the 1867 Beers Atlas of Albany in the town of Bethlehem so we know it's pre 1870 but we don't know exactly how much it pre-dates it by. I had to leave but left him there (with his 1827 capped bust dime...b@$^@rd), I spoke with him a while later and he had found an indian (didn't know the date yet). He also found this and I said I would ask about it. What do you all think? If you can't read it, it says:
"N.Y. State
Agriculture
Albany, NY
DOG
1
1967"

It seems as though this tag was either the first tag issued in 1967 or the tag of a dog of an important person. Knowing the site we were working, we believe it to be the latter. He was a prominent politician here in smAlbany. I'm not at liberty to say who it was at this point though. There's a rosie in one of the pics for scale. Nothing on the back. Send shootncoin a bunch of pm's to post the dime.

Yeah, I was thinking that it might be worth something because it's a number 1 or because it possibly hung around the neck of a prominent New Yorker's dog.

I found a dog tax tag from 1892. I really like it and wouldn't sell it even if it was worth money...

Well, neither of us collect them and my buddy told me if it was worth something, he would sell it. He keeps most of his finds but it seems he has no interest (neither do I) in the dog tag.

Okay I have to admit for a second I thought Cisco was the dog's name until I looked at the dates and realized it would have been at least 56 years old. I've seen others that have found dog tags for the same dog in an owners yard from different years. Just not a really old dog....

Me, I'd be contacting, then possibly blackmailing that Politician. Just how did "Fluffy" pass away? Foul play? In his sleep?
Keep us posted.
