I was out detecting 'solo' this morning, my two collegues having previous committments. I didn't fancy travelling too far because I only had until noon before I had to return home. I decided to go back to a location that we'd previously detected on a number of times, therefore I didn't expect to find a hell of a lot. The result was pretty much as expected, several pennies of Victoria, Edward VII & George V... date range 1889 - 1919. A coin slightly smaller than a penny, which is uncleaned & unidentified at the moment. And a Victoria Silver Florin of 1896. I've had a couple of other florins & halfcrowns from this same field but none of them has been in quite as good a condition as this one. I just thought I'd share the image of it.

Fuji FinePix A920, set to macro, coin 8 inches from the lens. Image then cropped / resized using standard PC software. Nothing special. Coin placed on coloured card for background and using natural lighting. Basically 'snap & go'. :icon_thumright:

I've said it a number of times "Victorian Florins & Halfcrowns are the business"...silvers good, but big silvers better!

Don't forget the Groat!

I have had this 1873 Gothic Florin since the 1960's:

Somebody wrote on it. :-[

I'm thinking that maybe the initials are there as a result of it being given as 'a love token' - apparently that kind of thing was common in that era...either bending coins into "S" shapes, or initialling silver coins then pass it on to the 'chosen one' (finger down throat etc, etc!)
By the way, I found a similar coin (1884) a few months ago, in the same field as the one found today.

A valid point!
A thing to remember about all these coins is that the ones most likely to be in the possession of the common man would almost certainly have been pennies... :(
The rest would be found in the pockets of the wealthy! >:(
