Found my 2nd silver coin today and it appears to be a 1/2 Reale dated 1808. It appears to have been clipped along the edges (a practice used to pilfer bits of silver from coins in those days). The coin measures slightly less than the 17mm diameter of a 1/2 Reale coin. It is pictured next to the "1 bit" piece cut from an 8 Reale coin that I posted here last Monday. Found with my F75 LTD about 6" deep with a 5" DD coil.

Coin from first year of Fernando VII's reign.
Don.......

Thanks for that info Don. I'm not well versed on Spanish coins. Is the denomination imprinted on the coin somewhere?

Yes, the "R" in the reverse legend signifies 1/2 R (versus '1R' for a one real coin.)
Also, the official size (18mm) and weight (1.7) gives its denomination away.
The reverse reads HISPAN ET IND R. M('o' over the 'M'--for Mexico City).T.H.(assayer's initials).

Many thanks Don. Sure glad you saw this thread. Never thought I would find old Spanish silver on our place here in Mississippi. I've been hunting in a pasture here. Actually I guess the silver isn't that old compared to the "Cobs" I've been reading about on that Treasurenet forum.

1686??
I believe Mexico didn't mint 1/2R or 1R coins in that year.
What makes you believe the date is 1686?
Any guess as to the mint?
Don.....

Im not sure on where it was minted as the mint mark is not visible, However....You can clearly see the "686" under the jewelers loop where the date is located. When I looked up Carolus II they did indeed make the cob for Carolus in 1686.

If you are referring to the piece on the right, it looks like a 2 bit piece to me. Mexican reales where legal tender in the US
for many years, as for some reason we couldn't get our act together.

Really Great Find, Congratulations!!!

HH, Ringfinder

P.S.
You have heard, 2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits a dollar, guess the Reale started all of that. LOL
