Hi All,

Went out today with my good friend, Gold Nuggets. Its been a year since we last got together, and we always have a great time.

We hit a spot that has quite a bit of history, mainly associated with railroad activity. My second dig of the day turned up this incredible Waltham pocket watch. I still can't believe the condition. I've done a bit of research, and believe this to possibly be one of Walthams Railroad Standard watches, built to a specification from the railroad companies originating in the early 1890's (the standard, not necessarily the watch). My own research has turned up a ton of similar models, but nothing that matches exactly (mainly the style of the numbers and the shape of the crown). Any help on dating this thing would be greatly appreciated. The case is 2.277" in diameter...not sure if this makes it a size 16 or 18.

Gold Nuggets: Great hunting with you again. One of these days I'm going to take you a spot where you have a chance of passing your coil over silver.

UPDATE: After about a million coats of penetrating oil, I managed to unscrew the bezel and get the watch open. The funny thing is that I was on the phone with Gold Nuggets about 20 minutes earlier, telling him I thought the watch was probably 1950's because of the condition, and that if I never got it open, I would at least have a tiny hope that it might be older.

The serial number (14585814) puts its manufacture at 1905-1906. The Waltham collector sites say its a Model 1883, Grade 825, 17 Jewel, Size 18. All I know is that its one of my favorite finds. I can't believe the condition. Other than a bit of rust, I bet the thing would work if I wound it.

See new pics.

I couldn't believe the great condition that watch was in
when you pulled it from the ground. Usually the glass is all
broken out and everything else is rusted beyond recognition.
But that one was SWEET!!! We always have a great time
when we finally get together to hunt. I'm definately looking
forward to next time.... Congratulations on a great find MP!!

As far as dating the watch goes, you don't want to jump into anything. Take some time to get to know it first, and then see if you have anything in common. You might find out you are totally incompatible.

It's usually good to be friends with the watch for a while first

That company must have sold one pile of watches! Sems almost every time I run across one it's a Waltham.

I wish he wand it up and see if it still runs, but that watch is going worth remembering.
look it up online about old railroad watches.
the last 2 pocket watches I have detected was burried in 8inches deep in sand of old playground area.

Thanks, V. Thanks for your advice, but I've decided I'm definitely going to date this watch! :P

Willy...I'm trying to find out how to open this thing without damaging it. I figure if I can at least get close to an age or exact model, I might find photos showing how it comes apart. And the railroad standard specifically required the winder to be at the 12 o'clock position.

That company must have sold one pile of watches! Sems almost every time I run across one it's a Waltham.
Patch...I can't recall exactly, but one website put Waltham's production at somewhere between 15-30 million watches. These things are more common than a lot of coins.

And finally, here's a pic of a watch ( a railroad standard) that is very close to mine. Mine only differs by the shape of the numbers...the 7 in particular is an easy one to tell that there's a difference.

M.P....
The updated pics are terrific and show the
excellent condition of the pocket watch. I was
totally supprised to read that it is as old as the
serial numbers verify. Congratulations on a find
that you will remember for a long time..... and me
as well. Gold Nuggets :hello:
