A goo day in anyones book. What you have found are cartridge box plates. The top one looks smaller and if it is it is called a baby US and is an 1839 issue. They are dug in civil war camps though. The baby US is rarer that the other. Both orginally had leather strips that went though the wire eyes.

Nice finds. Missouri had the most civil war activity after Virginia and Tennessee. There is still a lot to found in your state. Congrats on a great find.

Re: Civil War U.S. Belt Plate

Can you measure the smaller plate? There was a midsize US buckle which is fairly rare. I'm not sure if there was a midsized boxplate but your smaller one looks to big to be a baby US. Also the letters on the smaller plate look almost the same size as the letters on the larger plate. The letters on a baby US would be smaller.

Very nice recoveries-especially for this time of year. You will probably find some eagle buttons there also. WTG & HH, Quindy.

Re: Civil War U.S. Belt Plate

I think the smaller one is a midsized plate which is fairly rare. I've been digging 40 years and have dug a couple baby US's but never a midsize. It would be best to take it to a reputable dealer and let him look at it.

Re: Civil War U.S. Belt Plate

I have heard of people having these repaired or restored. Is that something I should consider or should I just leave them like they are?

Re: Civil War U.S. Belt Plate

My opinion is to leave them like they are. But it is up to you. It's hard enough to find one but two in one day. Awesome job. HH Tex
