Alright, let's have some fun! Found a small tin... and something's inside!

Found this tin today. Measures about 2 inches in diameter and 3/8" tall - AND THERE'S SOMETHING INSIDE! Rather than rip it open, I figure I'd take my time, clean it up a bit, and see if I can get it open without breaking it. I don't want to shake it too much in case whatever's inside scratches easily. Anyone want to guess what's inside? I really can't tell what type of material is it from the sound.

Also, any recommendations on the best way to clean it up first?

Thanks and happy hunting!

I take it you think something metal is inside, because you don't want to scratch it. Hope it's one of the priceless 1913 V nickels!

Probably not, but what the heck: it's nice to dream.

How to clean the case: use a soft paper towel dipped in soapy water for both side at first. See if there's any pattern, especially on the top.

Seems to be some protrusions on the side: maybe a locking button you have to press to open?

Gotta post photos of what's inside, too. (Oh, the suspense!)

Those little tins, have mirrors inside of them attached to the back. They will get loose and rattle (Bummer) :-\
I say that because I found one with a rattling noise it was the loose mirror inside. Good Luck!

Well, it wasn't the mirror, but a round piece of glass/plastic that was rattling around. The mirror's still in one piece! I was hoping some kid put a WLH in there, haha, but we'll have to wait till next time.

That's what makes detecting fun. You never know what you are gonna find. Cool little container. You should put some silver coins in that and bury it somewhere.

Years ago I dug up a small tin (I think it was a shoe polish tin) and it was completely corroded, crushed on one side, and shut tight. My brother tried to force it open with a screwdriver but I took my time and when I opened it finally there was lots of dirt and a $5 Liberty Head gold coin in it. That's the only gold coin I've ever found.

Re: Alright, let's have some fun! Found a small tin... and something's inside!

Many years ago a detecting friend of mine found one while we were detecting an old home site. He brought it to me and said...check it out, something is rattling inside. He opened it to find the broken mirror parts. 2 weeks later we are hunting together a woods site behind some old homes and I found one at the base of a big tree. It too rattled. I took it to him and said "My turn". Mine contained a childs cache consisting of little costume jewelry trinkets but also a Mercury dime and a really small silver Mexican coin. Ya never know!
