MASSACHUSETTS COLONIAL COPPER 1788 MY BEST FIND!!

Well, we had an extra low tide this morning, so I decided I'd get to work a little late & work a section of beach where a friend lost her wedding ring, been here before, & found various items, brass lamp parts, brass & silver pocketknife remnants, ship fittings, etc. Dug a black clump with brass grommet
coming out the side, when I first spotted it, i thought i found the ring, then another lamp fragment, and a clad quarter, what I assume is some type of brass ring, then some gold colored sheet, the tide starts coming in, I'm getting a deep hit, shifting from 18 to 40 on my Minelab, keep digging in a hole ful of water, keep checking, it's still down there, almost gave up twice, kept at it, check the hole, it's not there anymore, scan my diggings, get a clean 40 hit on top, fingers in the mud I pluck what I think is a George 2/3 penny, give it a rinse, and voila!! Happy Dance !! 1788 Mass Cent , Nice shape for being in salt mud this long, My Best Find Yet,
Only been MD'ing since March this year.
I Went & Did a little work, came home, cleaned & checked the"brass ring' and sheet, They appear to be a gold bezel (2" diameter, I'm back tomorrow to find the coin!!), and some kind of gold sheet, they read on my detector as gold/aluminum/lead, will be having them checked soon! Nothing but a freshwater rinse for the cent, and that's the way it's gonna stay, I am a Massachusetts native, and honestly never dreamed of finding a coin like this. My lessons learned:
    1) DIG EVERY HIT.
2)DON'T STOP TIL IT'S OUT OF THE GROUND.
Good Day & Happy Hunting To All, Herbie

Very cool finds, especially the Mass cent! Did the bezel actually test gold?

You certainly did much better than me this weekend! I found $1.26 in change and my best find was a '47 wheat, haha

I believe your other things are actually just brass. Being underwater, and buried, will preserve their original finishes in many cases. I have a friend in Virginia that's been fortunate enough to "dig" two US buckles in the last month in a river, and they look as fresh and brassy finished as when they were made 150 years ago.

The Massachusetts coin is a wonderful find! My dream find is a Missouri button from the Civil War. Stuff that's personal is the best kind, congrats!!

agreed brass. The bezel is actually a curtain ring.
