1929 "Champs" Sterling Silver ball Pendant - but Champs of what??

What kind of ball is this? The back resembles a basketball, but there's stitches on the front, making it almost look like a volleyball.

I think it's pretty cool. It's round (like a ball) and roughly the diameter of a dime and stamped Sterling. On it is inscribed:

Y Champs
29
EC (under the ball's stitches)

Maybe the "Y" stands for "Youth"?

Thanks for looking!

It's definately a basketball. Back in the day basketball used to have stitches too. The "Y" might be a short for YMCA. Very cool find.

I agree, it's definitely a basketball. The additional engravings look to be done by an unskilled hand.
