Nice day here in Illinois.

Out this morning, temps in the low 40's, bit of a
wind, but nice.

Dug this bracelet at about 4 inches; marked Italy and
also 925. Just a bit over 7 inches long, thin. Ladies size.

Bit crusty when I pulled it out, but toothpaste and a
brush work wonders.

Never know what you'll find for the day:
Swamp, woods, rocks area I was in today.
Heading back to van parked on road and something
catches my ear. Not 5 foot from me is this bird on the
ground, thought it was hurt at first and just watched.

It started to strut and fanned out its tail which was a
bright orange. Realize it was protecting its nest, on the
ground. Some vegitation and small rocks, the eggs, the
bird all blended in. Nice. Got home and got out my trusty
bird book, which I usually cannot find, or if found I cannot
match the bird I saw.

This one turns out to be a Killdeer, a plover. Made it a special
day; never saw a Killdeer protecting its nest.

all have a good un...........

Sherman,

Nice bracelet. Yep, that's a killdeer...plenty around here. That's how they protect the nest, they act "injured" to draw you away from the nest. The nest is not like a regular bird...in the gravel;, straight onto the ground. Once hatched the babies are up & running.

RR,

have seen them in the past; never knew that they
nested on the ground.

Bird book also say that both the male and female
are nearly identical; and yes, book says the young
leave the nest almost as soon as hatched.

have a good un..........

Really great find today Sherm!

I saw one of those birds a couple of years ago...acting all hurt and I went to investigate and saw the nest it was trying to protect. Strange behavior. :D

That's a Killdeer. I've watched them many times. Just walk in the oppisote direction and you'll find the nest! :)
