well those VDI numbers are right on the money for a large cent. maybe a real bad strike? a test piece? or a smashed die? weird!

I agree that it is more likely and altered coin. Counterfeits have other metals (often lead) which generally will drive VDI numbers down into the 50's or lower on White's detectors.
