I was able to get out this weekend for a few hours of hunting with a friend in Northern Maryland. We hit two sites that have been hunted heavily in the past. The first produced a pewter spoon and a brass thimble. I'd like to learn more about how to date thimbles - this one was at a depth that has produced mid-1800's items in the past (about 6 inches down in this location). We moved on to a farm field that seems to have had a house in the late 1700's to early 1800's. A map from 1865 does not show any structure in this location, so it is likely that it was already gone by then. After hunting for half an hour or so, I found a pewter button, and then a bit later got a huge hit. I dug down, and at about 4 inches out popped my first half cent! I can see the 8 and the 0 and since the bust is facing left, I know this must be an 1809. The funny thing is, out of about 6 coins found in the last few years at this site, this is the most recent! We will be back to this field, and hopefully it will be plowed next year.
Happy hunting!

Great find! love the early copper!
If you can ID & Date one, it's a great find!
Hot peroxide seems to work well on old coppers.
