Hi all, There been quite few old capped mine shafts around the town caving in lately. Quite warm and the humidity is high. I went up too Windmill Hill after the evening breeze started. I hunted the flat area with the low grass for a while with little luck. On the far side where the grass is longer i went for a look. I found that the cover [cap] of the main drive shaft of the Windmill Mining Coy had caved in. Ground must have got so wet that the cap just caved in. The hole is quite large and the sides have caved in too. The Winze shaft was about 3000 feet deep according too records.

I managed 3 surface finds all ink wells Circa 1890 and a Colony of Victoria Police Button [1880] made by Sir thomas Stokes & Sons.

Dont worry i stood well back from the shaft when taking pics.

:nono: Just a little advice from my personal experience"Never go into an area like that by your self again" You might see it to be safe but, from my experience it's never safe at any time under any condition. Just looking out for you little brother.... :laughing7:

Thank for the advice, I only have gold sites like this too hunt ,1200 square miles of them . Sorry no soft corn feilds around here. Yes your right many hazards around old shafts and theres far more deadly things that hide in the grass.

Very sound advice spitfire55! :icon_thumright: This is something we should all be aware of when out hunting in isolated areas alone. :icon_scratch:

Love the colour of those inks tinpan! :o I just love the look of old coloured glass!

Cheers,
Dave

Nice going on the inks, and the button.
Does a person report something like when you find a cap sunk like that?
