I'm building a room addition on an 1860's house here in town, and decided to bring my detector and hunt a bit on my lunch break. Found a lot of junk, (and a lot of my own nails) but managed to pull this lovely little gem out. It doesn't look like much, but it's a 1937 buffalo, and it's the first one I've found here. Any ideas on how to clean it up?

Buffalo's are a tough breed to clean if not impossible . Everyone I have found has looked rusty and beat up. Your buff is actually in good shape. Glad the ketchup worked out. Keep taking that detector to work and enjoy your lunch breaks :laughing7:

I have tried so many things to clean nickels and the best thing I have found to lightly clean them is an SOS pad, wet the pad and lightly rub the coin under running water, just enough to remove the crud, you want to improve the looks for your collection anyway right? ..........and do not clean one if it is a key date

Good job. Ketchup idea new to me, good. Also, first I have heard of looking at number of legs on the buffalo. Gather that they made some errors coins with only three legs and that they may have some additional value? Checked the one I found yesterday and it does have 4.

I just let it soak in a pile of ketchup on a plate for a while then used a soft toothbrush.

As far as I know the only three legged buffalo is on a 1937 d and they are worth a few hundred dollars, but people have faked them, so check them carefully.
