War of 1812-Light Artillery 1st Regiment button

Hello everyone. Well just got the finds from another outing at Button Hill cleaned up. Just basically rinsed and brushed. I dug some really nice Flat buttons, Tombac Buttons and a button that I need help Id'ing. This one has me stumped. I have found a British War of 1812 button at the Site. This one is different. The button appears to have an I inside of a Circle with a Script letter W, It is a fancy W it appears. I haven't seen one on the internet, but I know one of you button gods know what it might be. You guys are the best Button Id'ers on the planet. :notworthy: I had a good 3 hour or so hunt. I needed a little down time so I did some diggin. The relics were coming up nicely. I love digging these buttons off of button hill. I will post the picture of the button and I hope one or more of you guys will help me Id the button. Hope you enjoy the pictures and I will work on a video I took over the next couple of days. Thanks guys. zaxfire69
The button I need Id on.

Re: Light Artillery 1st Regiment. War of 1812

It is a cuff size button. Small...Man is it drying out fast. Has me worried. I'm scared to put anything on it. Here is another picture.

Alright...Man I am stoked. Now why in the world would I find this button on the same site as a British Redcoat button? That has me confused!!

How does one go about looking up buttons of this nature. Which book or website? I am interested in finding some books to identify buttons. Anyone know? Do they give you some kind of value on the button? :dontknow:

Re: War of 1812-Light Artillery 1st Regiment button

Thanks Sentinel. Yeah I didn't know the pic was upside down. :help: This is a cuff size button. This was actually the first button I dug on the hunt. Oh I will never sell this one. I have the Redcoat button that I will display together. I like to know about value when someone asks me. That is usually the first thing folks ask. I will keep this one just like all others. Hopefully I can get back up there and dig a couple more before the watermelons are planted. Now I need a coat size button to display along with it.

Re: War of 1812-Light Artillery 1st Regiment button

Umr I was looking at that also. Mine is solid for sure. Not a wreath like I see on the other examples. I haven't even seen another cuff size button on the net like this. I have only seen the Coat buttons. It is different. I think it is remarkable just to be able to dig it and ID it. I'm just wondering how many cuff size buttons like this are out there. I always wonder about the craziest things.

Not uncommon in some areas. What was the British button? "1812" buttons go from the mid. 1780s to the war, and many people call later buttons 1812 even though they aren't. So you can easily be looking at near 50 years and a lot can happen at any given area in that amount of time.

The British button was a Generic British Redcoat button. Dug in Natchez, Mississippi. More than likely deposited around the time of the Battle of New Orleans.

Can you read the makers mark? It looks like it could date post 1812, and there sure is a lot of misc. GR buttons dug. Pretty sure not all are military, but have no idea about that one.

Re: War of 1812-Light Artillery 1st Regiment button

Haven't cleaned it enough to see the makers mark. The button is really fragile and I don't want to ruin it by over cleaning it. I like it just the way it is. I'm afraid I'll damage it. I might could dry brush and toothpick the back of the button enough to I'd makersmark.
