1st 2011 Hunt! Connecticut & Vermont Coppers (HELP PLEASE), Buttons, Military, +

Hey everyone,

Been a while for me due to deployments, family, work etc. Hopefully now that the season is on us I will have more time to post.

I got out with a buddy on the weekend and we decided to try out an area we had been long considering. Sadly we only had half a day to hunt, but it was a pretty good hunt and the weather was great!

It was my first day with the F75 Ltd. It worked fairly well in an iron infested site and landed me some goodies. During the last hour of the hunt I used the Explorer and hunted the same area. I found all of my coins with the Explorer and half of the buttons. I am sure much of this is my lack of experience on the F75. I still think it would be in tough to beat the Explorer.

Anyhow, on with the finds...and hopefully someone out there has some knowledge on early colonial state coppers. I have NO experience with them having only ever found a crusty connecticut copper last year. I know there are many varieties, some being quite rare. Chances are mine are the common varieties but I would love it if someone can help me figure out which ones I have!

The coins consist of 2 x King George II Irish half pennies which are quite worn obviously. There is also an 1814 spread eagle token. There is 1 Vermont copper and 2 Connecticut Coppers. One of the Connecticut coppers is MUCH larger than the other and has what appears to be holes, almost like the coin is hollow!? Perhaps it's a counterfeit!?

I don't have a scale to weight the coins, but the Vermont copper is 27.45mm and dates 1788. It is 1.90mm thick.

One of the Connecticut coppers (the clipped one) is dated 1788 and measures 27.75mm and is 1.41mm thick

The other Connecticut is dates 1785 and is 29.50mm and is 1.74mm thick.

Even if they are insignificant varieties I would really appreciate knowing which they are. Thanks in advance!

Other finds from the day was a portion of a Revolutionary War cartridge pouch plate with "GR". I found an interesting pewter button from the same period I am sure with something on it. MIGHT be a "USA" button but tough to tell! There is also a large medal of which I am unsure of the material...but it's in very rough shape! I think this is also Revolutionary War era. I can make out a bust and some letters. Any ideas?

I found a British Royal Artillery button and out of nowhere a 15th regiment French button.

Other finds including a portion of a serpent side plate, many buttons, pewter spoons, keg spigot, etc.

I couldn't have asked for a better first hunt of the year! Gotta love colonial home sites!

Thanks for looking!

:o That is one fine outing :o
sure looks like something is 'wrong' with that first copper :icon_scratch:
The button can't be anything but a 'USA' :hello2:
From your banner list, this appears to be 'just another day', Congrats on your finds !

Incredible hunt, but it seems like it's going to be one of those where you were so close... maybe times 6!

Here's the Vermont for starters.

1788 VERMONT COPPER -
RYDER 16

PCGS No: 563

Rarity: Very Common

I thought Ryder 16 at first, sure looks like it, however, sure looks like a dot after LIB??? Don't think Ryder 16 has a dot.

The 1788 Conn is a Miller 16.3-N Common variety

BTW, Congrats on a great hunt, all those finds are a months worth of good finds for most.

I think so too. Wish the button was in better shape though...same with the plate.

Thanks for the comments.

AWESOME HUNT!!!! WOW... IP beat me on the ID It is a RR-16. What threw me off at first was what appeared to be a stop,(or period), on the Reverse after the B. Looks like a bubble in the metal though. Nice ID IP......But I wanted to be first! ;D

Yes, it appears you nailed the Vermont Copper. Everything matches. A shame, but what I expected. I was hoping for 1 rare one in the bunch! At the end of the day however, they are all pretty rare in my collection so I'll take em'!

Thanks for the help

Nice finds! Those coppers are in awesome shape!

That emblem kind of reminds me of the old OK Chevrolet logo from the 60's

Probably corrosion, otherwise it would have to be a unique reverse because Ryder 16 is the only use for that obverse die. (and probably much too close to be different, so a corrosion spot)

Any thoughts on the "holes" in the 1785? They don't really look like dents since I can sort of see inside the coin. Strange.

Oh well, it's a site that could hold a rare one and they should be plowing it up soon. Here is hoping! The coins are in good condition considering it's a worked field.

Not sure, maybe old plow damage.

Yes...The field hasn't been plowed for long, at least not in recent years. I am eager for them to plow again in the next week or two

That was an awesome hunt there! State coppers, and early military relics - it don't get any better!!
