Found my oldest coin today on a one hour hunt. The coin is not in great shape and all I did was run water over it. It took a while but I can see the date 1798 under the magnifying glass. I'm just glad to get a date since this Maryland soil does not treat copper to well. Looks like the coin was hit with a plow. When I dug it I did not think it was a coin since it was so thick but I was wrong. We found some half cents in the same area. Couldnt get a date on the half cent but by the wreath it dated 1800 to 1808. Thanks for looking and happy hunting.

1799 would be a really good one to find! It almost looks like a 1798 in the photo though.

Cheers,

Buck

I do agree that it looks like an 8. Under the lighted magnifier it looks like it doesn't connect to make an 8 but as the coin gets drier I can see the date better. The last number just doesn't look right. Is there anything to do other than peroxide to clean it up a bit.

1798 are most often found and that is what your coin is, I blew the date up and the curl of the number and the size of the center holes all indicated a 1798, not the rare 1799.

Thanks for your help. I don't know much about coins but just happy I found a coin from the 1700's and could actually see somewhat of a date. Thanks again.

Nice character in that coin. I love it when they aren't perfectly round.
