1890-1920 U.S. Army pendant or medal identification

I need some help in the identification of the attached pendant that I recovered from a US Army trash pit along the U.S. Mexican border.

From other items found the date of the trash pit is from the 1890’s to the 1920’s. The U.S. Army was very active during the turn of the century on the border due to Mexican raids and WWII.
