1924 School Yard Hunt - Where did all these Memorials come from?!

Detected my daughters school this afternoon for 3 hours in 92F heat! Not a lot of interesting finds to report, except that I found 9 Memorials all within a 1' radius. In one hole alone I pulled out 6! I don't have the foggiest idea how these might have ended up here either!

Totals for the day:

2 Canadian Dimes
15 Canadian Pennies (1-1942)
9 US Memorials (dating from 1963 - 1992)
1 Copper Button
1 Very toasty coin, this ones a mystery.

It measures 33.5mm, was originally probably 34mm, worn very thin, I can just barely see a clear rim edge and has absolutely no details left on it! I think it's probably English and very old! Can anybody help me with this one!

i super imposed a Edward VII's penny over one picture and matched up the marks i could see on one of your pictures
as you can see the markings match up almost exactly making your coin a Edward VII's from 1902 to 1910
but please remember that this is just a guess

the red shows the points i used to match the coin

Thanks very much fmerg for your work in helping me with the ID of this coin. I went on to the CoinDataBase website and they are stating that the Edward VII Penny has a diameter of 20mm, where as the coin I found currently has a diameter of 33.5mm.

I can see where the points match up in the picture that you super imposed and it does look pretty close!

it also could be a Great Britain queen Elizabeth the 1st or second Penny the back of the coin was about the same
and the coin was about the size of our half dollar

Kinda odd findin all those Memorials, something to do with our 'Independence Day?'..
The only guesses I can come up with on the large copper is the George III 1806 Penny issue at 35 mm, or 1797 one penny Cartwheel at 36 X 3 mm, there was also a two Penny (same design) at 41 X 5 mm. (Pictured)

Thanks for your input with regard to my mystery coin! Thanks for the link, I've saved it in my favourites. The two items in pic #5 are a King George 1942 CDN Penny and a copper button with a school slogan which is written in Latin.

Reads as follows: SPECTEMUR AGENDO with a Lion above a crest or shield.

Thanks for clearing that up buddy! As far as I'm concerned it's "finders keepers", sorry! Though today I did find a 1935, a '42 and a '50 Wheat. Now they're telling me that "they want to go home after being in the ground for 50+ years"! I said, "sorry finders keepers"!

The school was built in 1924 and I've only covered about 20% of it so far. It's right around the corner from my house so I'll be able to hunt it for years to come. I haven't found any rings or silver here yet, but I know it's there . . . I can here it calling my name!

This schools had a number of additions, but the original sports field's still intact. I also have a feeling there used to be an electric rail car stop on the southeast corner where I took the photo showing the baseball fence, this is where I found the toasted coin. The electric rail cars stopped running past the school in the 1950's.

Thanks for your post Allen! I hear what you're saying! Our Canadian pennies from 1999 and beyond are some type of zinc copper material and breakdown in a similar way that your late Memorials do!

I just hope that when I get my coin tumbler I'm able to save a few for the bank!
