I made a couple for my kids. I used a heavy soup spoon and then a 8 oz ball peen hammer. Once it was roughly to size flip the spoon over so you are looking at bottom and hit coin. This will give you a very nice rounded ring if you do not want to do all the filing on it.
I also used a dremel tool to carve out the inside. My girls really treasure them.

I think it was in the movie Cool Hand Luke where they show a prisoner making a ring by beating the edges with a spoon.
Cool video to view.

I made several when I was a young`in. We always used half dollars. they come out much better than quarters. Use a spoon.

well this is strange... I have only found one in over 20 years of hunting... they don't come up on tnet very often... they are a rare find so it seems... I have never heard of them till now...

yet a lot of you guys say you have or you know how to make them...

Anyone else find one of theses in the wild?

Pretty rare indeed. I've got only two in 25 years of hunting. One is made out of an Australian silver coin, the other is a Canadian silver quarter.

Usually two or three will show up per year in our metal detector club meetings for show and tell. Probably a lost art that was quite a bit more popular when silver coinage was still in circulation.

Back in the '70s when I was going to college, found a few of these on campus. Don't know where I've put 'em now, but they were interesting and still counted, at least for me, as a ring. My fingers are pretty thick, so bet I just didn't wear it on my pinky any more. House was broken into a few years ago, and it might even have been stolen then. Still nice curiosities though.

I remember some high school shop teachers would show kids how to make 'em back then. To me they usually looked pretty rough from all the bangin' with the hammer.
