Found this yesterday and after checking it out online, i'm really bummed it doesn't have the front as in the sample pics.

I think according to the reference site it is a one piece button.

Looks to be a mid-1800's flat button if the front is flat. Very nice find, and lots of gold gilt still. :thumbsup:

Nice backmark! It's definitely a civilian button. According to the button book, that firm specialized in them from the early 1800's and went bankrupt by the mid-1850's.

Those where also worn by CS soldiers, around here in the western theater, we find them in CS camps and skirmish sites. The CS forces out here were very poorly supplied so they wore what ever they could get your hands on. A virgin CS camp may not have a single marked CS button in it, only CS bullets. I wonder if they wore wooden and glass buttons. We call them penny buttons, yours is a very nice one.
