So I hit the same site from my 1909 V nickel eye-ball hunt on Wednesday. Made my way deep into the woods to the site and after a brief stand-off with an empty red pickup truck I started my hunt. Dug a bunch of targets with almost no trash. Dug some cut shards of copper and what looks like estuchen covers for keyholes. Finally got a solid 76 signal. There it was, my first IH penny in pretty good shape too. Moved along through the "highlights" of the site picking up a glazed spout to a clay jug before hitting another good target. Got a choppy but repeatable signal, so I dug. There was my 2nd buckle ever but this one was a nice shoe? buckle. Going back on Sunday for a proper hunt.

I know the IH looks bad but I have not cleaned it other than to rinse it off. When it is wet, you can clearly see 1860 but when it dries it is hard to see the details.
Can someone help me date the shoe buckle (or whatever kind of buckle it actually is)?

Ben awesome! That injun will clean up nice. I hear linseed oil works well along with toothpicking. That buckle is also awesome! See you soon! :headbang:

If you try the hot peroxide and toothpick method of cleaning, I bet you end up with a full LIBERTY on that!

VERY cool buckle, and looking at the link provided by Hammered, a pretty scarce find.

Good luck on Sunday.

Your buckle is actually a suspender buckle and will date prior to the 1870's. More likely late 1850's. Anytime you find one with the sharp, pointed tines they will usually be from the same era. Clean it up and look closely for a patent date between the tines or a makers name. Good finds!!!!!! Donnie

Good job on the Indian and if you can clean off the suspender buckle you may have a patent date or makers name on it. Donnie

Shiver me timbers, what a BUCKLE!

Reminds me of the time I found that Viking Ignot in SJ.

Nice going on the finds! Suspender buckle circa 1850 is about right! :icon_thumright:

As for the early Copper-Nickel Indian Heads (1859-1864) as well as Flying Eagle Cents, there is not much you can do to clean them without damaging them more. I won't even do the Hydrogen Peroxide treatment on them.

Either way it is a good find!

I bet you are glad you were not with me as originally planned.....getting kicked off property that I had permission to hunt! >:( Oh, well! Like the old saying says, "That's how the coil swings!"
