George Washington Inaugural Button

I recently found this GW button. I know that well perserved versions of this button can be worth something but wonder what one as corroded as this one would be worth (if anything).

I've tried to find an appraiser in my area (southeastern NH, or northeastern MA) but can't find anyone. Does anyone know if it is worthwhile getting this thing appraised and if so who would be a good appraiser for the job?

I think that I would get it appraised. If you get on the White's Detector site, there's a GW button there as well. From their post, those buttons are quite rare and could potentially be worth quite a bit of money. Theirs was appraised at around $1500 in a fair-poor condition. According to my friend who specializes in Tokens and Exonumia, he looked it up and its a R1 meaning 70+ known pieces. Very nice to find, and worth in that condition prolly $200.00 to $400.00 depending on the auction house.
Hell of a find and something that would be the highlight of my TH carreer so far.

Looks like about $200 or so is right

I contacted the guy that runs the George Washington Button site on the internet and sent him that picture. He said it of course depends on any would be buyer but his guess is that it would go for about $200 considering the shape it is in.

It is such a great find that I would rather keep it than sell it, if for $200.

Hey Steve, that would certainly make my year. What a treasure to find. Alberts book on buttons lists your button as a WI 11 and there are 8 varieties of this type. If you can give me the diameter in mm I can probably narrow it down a bit. Also the width of the oval in mm that the GW is in. Some varieties are more rare than others. It appears that your might be an WI 11C if it is 34 mm in diameter and if the oval is 17.7mm by 9.2 mm because it has a wide spacing between the G and W. If this is the case it has a rarity of 5 which might explain why the expert gave you a price of $200 rather than higher which would be expected for an R1 type. In any case, I would give my left arm for one of those. Congrats on a fantastic find. Congrats...Lance
