Went to an old farmhouse this morning that I had obtained permission to hunt. Found 8 memorials then found this. 185x Seated Quarter about 8 inches deep. Not only was there a hole drilled through the date, it was also bent where he had hammered the hole through it. I figured it is already wrecked, so I straightened it out without any further damage. So disappointing to find a coin that you don't find very often and it is wrecked. Oh well. I'll put it on my key ring for luck.

Maybe you should be glad there is a hole in it.... if there wasn't the original owner may have never tossed it.

I would proudly wear it!
My only 3-cent silver dug has the smallest possible pin hole drilled into it,
but I love it like a couple of my old girlfriends.

I think it adds a certain amount of appeal to it. Think of the story it might tell

Yeah a bit of a shame. But, you really should calm down a bit when digging. Maybe, dull the ice pick a little. LOL :)

Still. I would love to find one, in any shape!

Good job!

As mentioned above if there was no hole it may have never been lost. My only capped bust dime is holed but I still cherish it

??Would you toss one today because it had a hole??Do you know what 25 cents was worth in the '50's?They were commonly "Holed",because pants did not have pockets and coinage was kept on a string.
Take it for its character and historical significance, and be thankful!A large number of older coins you will dig will be holed too,so I guess get used to it

Better get used to it. This hobby is 98% disappointment. But the rewards on the 2% are great! Be happy for what you found. Hogge

Kinda looks like they used it foe target practice with a .22? Who would do that though...back in the day it was worth a lot!

I appreciate all the comments. I've been detecting for a long time and my oldest coin an 1838 large cent is holed as well as several Indians and a half cent. So I understand you will find them that way. It just bugs me when I do.

I would be absolutely THRILLED to find that seated quarter....EVEN with the hole. I have not dug a seated quarter since 2010.....I am long overdue, and would take one in ANY shape!

Without the hole you may have never found it because it may have never been lost without it. You can only find what people lose & the keyring idea is great.
