Just though I would show you all the neat cut silver penny I found this afternoon in the falling rain.
This 1/2 cut penny was the best of 4 hammered silver pennies that I found.

It appears to be a Harold I penny which would have been from 1035-1040 when he was King of England for five years (he lived from 1016 to 1040).

Just look a the quality of the coin, I would have loved to find the whole penny before it was cut.

Sorry Oldsopy, but that is the best I can do here, I am not at home, and we do not have any sun at the moment.
This is not one coin, it's the front and back side of a cut hammered coin.

Back then when they did not have any change for a penny, which was worth quite a bit, they cut them in half to make change.

Agreed, it looks to be a late Saxon/Norman Penny but can't ID it with those photos. Probably a rare coin though!

Nice, I should have got my book out as well, but was lazy:laughing9:

Rare coin! Still a gap in my collection, a half would do, in fact if I could ID a Qrter I would fill the hole!

The coins were cut in half at the mint as they were needed, as they were not producing round halfpence. actually it was a serious offence to deface the coinage for the general public. Hutch.

Super Find! Maybe it's worth at least 650 pounds?
Like Cru said, that is not the way it works. It used to be a cut half of a coin was worth about 1/4 the whole coins value.
That was because with the detectors back then half cuts and quarter cuts were scarce, they could not really be found with the detectors that people had back then.
Nowadays, with the modern detectors many more are found, so the prices dropped a lot, very much actually.
This is the first Norman half cut that I have every found, all of the others were short cross coins (with a few execptions). It could be worth a bit of money actually because its in such good condition.

Anglo-Saxon Harthacnut - Lydford / Aelfwine - Fleur de Lis Penny

I can't be sure without seeing the letters better, but it might also be Harthacnut?
Yea, that sure is a possiblilty, will try tomorrow to make clearer and better photos. Although I might be gone the whole day.

On the last day of our hunt a full coin was found (not by me), it is a Norman coin. Although I have seen the coin I did not have time to determine which one it was.
