Today is the day I finally broke the silver slump in this field. We have been hunting this particular field on this property since March and to this day we have pulled 6 large cents, 3 colonial coppers, 2 indian head pennies and a couple wheats. We have wondered and wondered why we have not found one single early US silver coin or any silver colonial coinage in a field that sits right next to a church established in 1810. Well today after work I killed that mystery in a big way!
Got out there to hunt after work around 4:00 and was there for TWO hours and dug the following: Square nails, pieces of foil, shredded aluminum and 3 ketchup packets(yep! My first ketchup packet spill! lol). There was a hired hand mowing the upper half of the field so I was working down below him where he mowed last week. Literally as the sun was about to set I come across a good signal and it was finally something other than a nail, a small tombac button. About 4 feet away I get a little blip in my headphones and I slow my swing down over the target and it's coming in loud and clear, right smack dab in the middle of the field. My first thought as I have this clump of dirt in my hand with my pro-pointer sounding off at the clump...another nail I'm sure. Break it apart and WOW!!! The FIRST silver from this field has finally shown itself. A 1774 cut Spanish 2 reales. The DETAIL is XF on this baby...and the fact that it's cut makes it that much more unique. I was on cloud nine to say the least.
