I had a 2 week relic hunting trip scheduled for a couple of months, but for unseen obstacles it was narrowed down to 4 days. Two of the 4 days were spent with my good friend kuger where I found the iron stirrup. Thanks for the outings kuger and I'm looking forward to getting together with you again in the Spring! Another day was a bust with another friend but still had a great time!! The last day on my trip I hunted with another friend where I found the brass stirrup. It was a dandy find as well!! After returning home, I still had another day to hunt before going back to work and actually managed a few good coin finds!!! They were an 1858 half dime, 1862 IH, and 1842 dime!!!! Not to bad for a day in the snow!!!!! I threw in a pic. of the stirrups with a stirrup I found at a Colonial site in S. C. many years ago also.

Merry Christmas fellow TNET forumites!

BEAUTIFUL finds! How deep was the snow?

That day it was 2 to 3 inches. I went to my ole standby area a week later and hunted in 4 to 6 inches of snow and frozen ground. I did manage a few areas under trees where the snow was an inch or two. Here are a few pics. from my last hunt of the year.

Why would you not use a spade in these conditions, cut your recovery time in half?

Simple...poor planning! I took my gear out of one vehicle and put in another vehicle because of the conditions, simply forgot to put in the spade. Thanks for your concerns and reply to my finds though!!

What is the date of the iron/steel one at the back of the picture (of all three)?

IM, you & Cody had a great hunt. I would expect that from 2 veteran hunters. Most stirrups look to be in good shape too. Congrats, Quindy.

Not sure...just know that it was Colonial and we were digging early 1800's relics.

fishstick - the two recent stirrups were dug out of early 1850's sites!

Thanks for the rest of the replies everyone!

Cool finds Ironman, I have been lucky enough to find 1/3 of a stirrup, Have been told it is Confederate, But as there is no markings at all on it I have my doubts........................HH

Those are some good looking stirrups. The coins ain't bad either. Nice to see some die-hard diggers dealing with the elements to dig some early relics.
