I had another great day digging up my family history. I was super stoked to dig another family store token and many other goodies. I didn't even know how good of relic the heart shaped martingale was until I posted on my coin & relic club's Facebook page. It's in pretty rough shape but super cool.

Very interesting finds! What is a Martingale?

Thanks. It's a breast plate for a horse during the Civil War.

Great stuff!!! You may wish to paint some elmers glue mixed with a few drops of water on that martingale to keep it from drying out and flaking away. Then thin it out with the brush so it won't look shiny when it dries. Looks to be pewter.

Thank you sir. I wish I Would of seen this last night. I was asking people in my relic club how to treat it because it was falling apart. No one came through for me. I soaked it in olive oil. Is that bad?
