Headed out solo today. My two mentors (max and guru) were not able to make it today so I hit the beach alone. Pretty cold out and a slight wind. Tide was much higher today (even at low tide) with the eastern wind coming in. I still managed to get into the exposed rocks again and pull some good stuff.
I was using the Sovereign GT (Nulled out the iron and switched to silent mode) with the 5" coil and Ron's 180 meter. Again, what a great combo. It made it SO easy to separate the individual targets as there is ALOT of crap in those rocks! Started with some of what Max calls "grey matter" (Gaaaahhhh!) or lead fishing weights. My 3rd target was where it got interesting. I hit an area with several distinct targets (a couple of them iron that would null out) but one really stood out. Had a nice low, sort of scratchy sound to it. Was giving off a nickle/penny sound but couldn't quite nail it down as the meter was jumping around a bit with the other signals there. Two scoops into the rocks (grateful to have that 720i Stealth Scoop with the nice point!) and I pulled out this:

Of course at first glance and seeing it all covered with sand my heart skipped a beat, could it be? Gold.......? Couldn't see any markings so I put it away till I got home to do some research. Didn't look quite right for gold but I could hope right? Hit a bunch of other stuff today as well. Pulled 4 dimes ( I believe 3 may be silver Roosevelt after cleaning a bit but the dates are pretty much gone) 2 nickles (again, 1 may be silver) and a few junked up pennies.

I also found a cool brass tube with blue glass at one end which looks like it may have been some kind of instrument light possibly from a ship or something. If anyone recognizes it, let me know.

And of course the usual aluminum crap although there wasn't much in the way of can slaw and pull tabs, most of it was all slag from old house fires or aluminum cans being melted in fires on the beach. I also found what looks like part of a hasp to something that would be locked by a padlock. Pretty big so I have no idea what it went to but it was REALLY crudded up.

On my way home I called max to see if he could help ID the coin I found. He pointed me to a local coin shop and away I went. They checked it out there, put some water and WD40 on it to see if anything would come out and were able to make out "Republic of" and "19". Ok, so it wasn't old (dammit!) and it wasn't gold (dammit again!) but that was all we could see. I brought it home and made some rubbings and was able to get a little more detail and this is what it turned out to be:

Republic of Kenya 10 Cents coin, minted between 1966-1978. Though no real value (made of copper and nickle which is why it sounded like it did) it is an interesting find. Virginia Beach/Norfolk area sees cargo and military ships from all over the world pass by so I guess it's possible someone dropped or threw it overboard at some point and it somehow made its way to the beach and got trapped in the rocks. Took a bit of digging to figure this one out but I'm glad I did otherwise it'd be driving me crazy till it was solved. Hope you enjoyed the post, sorry it was so long winded. See how the weather goes tomorrow but it is supposed to be crappy.

Hello,
The larger iron piece is a wood plane with cap and lock screw. I can't tell the age period because the sea water really eats up iron. If there are any markings that you can read, then that may be a clue to a more definite I.D..
Good Luck,
Wagbert

Thanks for the info Wagbert! I have it set aside with some other finds that I need to give a good cleaning to. Maybe some lectrolosys first if I can put together a big enough set up. May be a while before I get to it but when I do, I'll PM you and show you the results and see what you think!
